Ancient Chapel of Rest, North Norfolk

Building is known to have previously been used as chapel of rest, wood store, darkroom, abattoir, dairy.
Main part of building Victorian – far end much older
The group was split into two and this report follows group “A”

On entering far end of building, K immediately felt raised hairs on the back of his neck and P had to catch her breath. Both sensed a young lad, later known to be called David, he was showing himself aged around 15-16 and bore a scar on his right cheek, it was felt possibly caused by a kick from a horse. The damage caused him to have trouble eating after the event.

Then K experienced a chubby male figure standing behind him. He was wearing leather boots (these were laced and did not have thick soles). He prodded K with a hook. This man was the butcher at the abattoir and gave his name as George Winston. He looked like a butcher wearing an apron and leather over trousers like chaps. He liked his job and he also liked to play tricks on the young David. He had a good sense of humour and was a rum ‘un he said. All the while he was relaying this information he had K twitching constantly and held in a strange stance with his right leg at an angle that he was unable to release.

M asked if George could explain any reference to the number 500. It was felt that this was the Kings Ransom. George explained that he was also considered as the local vet and he would help animals if he was able to but if they were beyond help, such as a deer on one occasion, he would slaughter and share the meat among the village. Deer belonged to the king and this is where the term kings ransom came from.

The group then proceeded into the slaughter house. We were immediately assisted in our quest for information by the ‘yard man or tinker would clean up and sharpen knives etc. He had white thinning hair and was wearing faded corduroy type trousers and leather gaiters. P sensed a strong smell of offal that she said would be taken into the village, as nothing would be wasted, the workhouse would share in it also.

P felt the time would be pre 1900. There was a strong sense of fear from the animals that had been waiting to be slaughtered. The room still had the gully in place, where the blood from the animals would drain and be washed away. Hooks were evident in the rafters and brickwork. There was also what appeared to be a wooden tether point.
A young woman named Mari made herself known to the group. She had a hair lip and walked with a strange gait – possibly pigeon toed. She would bring bread and any other supplies needed by the men. Mari stayed with the group for a while.

We then proceeded into the garden area behind the slaughterhouse. The garden was walled and backed onto the church where it was felt that nuns would walk to the building, which at some time would have been used as a schoolroom for the village children. It was felt that the garden was a sacred place. There was a strong feeling of children playing.

M felt a strong water presence and used a pendulum as a diviner in the corner of the garden just outside the door and discovered that there had in fact been a working well in place.

K was taken by Mari outside to the front of the building and was introduced to Samuel who was a herdsman and related to Mari. After some probing it was discovered that he was her father. Mari died from consumption at a very young age. K felt the urge to spit constantly, as Samuel would have done. A fine mist of dust kept falling from the rafters above even though nothing was there. Someone slept in the rafters above and this was also where Mari was ‘used’ by others. It was felt also that Mari and David were constantly mocked by the locals.

Moving on to the area believed to have been a chapel of rest, it was immediately felt that in fact the room was no more than a simple room with a cross in it and had never been blessed. Itchy faces and bodies were felt by all present. It was felt that a large number of villagers had died from small pox, and the bodies would be wrapped in sacking and laid out in this area.

K felt the presence of a man with an RAF connection. A short man, with grey white hair and a barrel chest. He felt that his death had been an accident and was not meant to happen. He also felt that this connection was to a family member of the current owner of the building. K had the feeling of falling down, an arm in a sling and possibly a broken arm occurred. When questioned, the owner said that his father had been a warrant officer in the RAF, who had died from a fall when he hit his head. He had also recently suffered a heart attack prior to the fall and it was felt at the time that he should not have died from this.

The two groups combined and a short séance was held. Several spirit contacts were made establishing that deaths had occurred from the sport of bare knuckle fighting. The group experienced sensations of touching, strong drafts and although it was a warm evening, many experience a chilling cold feeling. A young lady came forward who had been the May queen and was murdered but did not know why. She wanted to be known and said that being May Queen had been the best experience of her life. A man named Arthur had been one of the victims from a bare-knuckle fight. K experienced stomach cramps, and felt as if he had been punched in the stomach. His opponent was identified as Paul.

G felt that she was being pulled backwards and a number of the group could see a blue haze glowing around her. G was unable to identify the sex of the spirit and later said that it was an unknown entity. She said that for a short moment in time she had felt lost and unable to speak. The entity had wanted her to break the circle.
The circled was closed and blessed and everyone agreed a further visit at another date would be a very good idea.
